Alaska’s fiddling poet, Ken Waldman, plays “old-time music,” string-band style music, linked to Appalachia, predating bluegrass and with variants almost everywhere in North America. While the music is more widely recognized as square dance music, it’s also music of a community, and made among friends. Some of the tunes Ken plays are more than two centuries old, although he also plays and has recorded over a hundred more he himself composed in that style. What distinguishes Ken even more is that he uses his music in performance as backdrop as he shares original poetry—often about his music—and tells stories, most often about the music or about Alaska.
